What We Always Get Wrong About Health & Fitness Goals - And What to Focus on Instead
A while back, I shared a photo in my IG stories saying that it's time to put some meat back on my bones. What I mostly got in response was some variation of "oh whatever" eye rolls. I really wanted to see how people would react. What if I say I want to put on weight? Would anyone cheer me on? Would anyone else say they had a similar goal? Or would people think I am being ridiculous?
Turns out, the latter. Sadly, being skinny is still pretty much considered being in shape.
Meanwhile, I'm over here exhausted from toddler-induced sleep-deprivation, stressed with having to function at work and in class after sleeping an average of 4 hours a night, sad because I am not getting in my workouts like I used to and overall not happy with how I feel in my skin. My clothes don't fit (no, I'm not happy about that), I'm way weaker than I used to be (which just sucks) and I lost the little bit of booty I had managed to grow from lifting heavy (insert all the crying emojis here).
I just want OUT of Popdownsville.
Why am I going on about this? Well, because what we need to understand is that skinny does NOT mean fit.
You CAN be slender AND fit, just like you CAN be thick AND fit. And all kinds of variations of whatever size AND, yup, still fit! We need to understand that FIT doesn't have a size.
Yo. Let me say that again, for those in the back: FIT DOESN'T HAVE A SIZE!!!
Healthy is how YOU feel in your skin.
Healthy is how you treat your own body, how you think about and talk to yourself.
Healthy is fueling your body and mind with nutritious food and positive thoughts.
Healthy is moving your body often and getting all the rest you need. (Look my goals right here)
Healthy is being able to handle adversity, challenges, so-called "haters" if you will.
Being able to get back up when you fall down. (Working on this too)
Healthy is knowing you will fall down a bazillion times but you gotta keep moving.
Healthy TRULY is a lifestyle - as clichΓ© as that is.
So could we please go into 2019 thinking of health beyond our size and number on the scale? Can we abandon judging another person's appearance and instead support them on their own journeys - especially if they were brave enough to share their goals publicly? Could we focus on those that inspire and just walk away from those who don't?
I say this not to beg for anyone to cheer me on my own mission to become my healthiest self (although that would be lovely π) but because I want to see YOU succeed.
I'm probably the biggest cheeseball to say this, but there is literally NOTHING I love more than seeing others succeed!
Hit a new PR in the gym? Dude, high five man! - Lost the weight your doctor suggested you lose?? OMG, give me a hug!
Feel confident enough in that banging swimsuit to traipse up and down the beach?? Yes my girl/guy, WALK OUT inna di video light!!
Killing it at work/starting your business/creating that art??? I could cry I'm so happy for you! (yes, I'm THAT girl - don't judge me hahaha!)
What are YOUR goals for this year/month/week? What WILL you achieve this year (or next month, or week, or in the next hour and 32 minutes)??
Drop me a comment and let me know what you think!
